Man this is some of the best country cooking you can ask for. Since I started coming here to Nashville, I have to have it at least once a week, and you will never leave feeling disappointed.

The long-term regulars

Forty years of Tuesdays

When Silver Sands was forced to close for a fortnight in January 2025, reporters covering the reopening found a queue running out of the door and onto the pavement. One of the people in it, a native Nashvillian, told The Tennessean he had been coming at least once a week for forty years and had missed his pork chops and sweet potatoes badly. He said that with nobody at home to cook for him now, he comes here — and that when the restaurant shut, he was hurting.

That is the kind of relationship this restaurant has with its customers, and it is not unusual. There are people who have eaten here since childhood and now bring their grandchildren. The owner delivers meals to elderly regulars who cannot get in.

It is also why the restaurant has survived a tornado and a shutdown. Both times, the people who eat here organised on its behalf.

What critics and writers say

Beyond the counter

Atlas Obscura

Gastro Obscura described Silver Sands as a living piece of history — a place where regulars have queued five days a week for more than seventy years for the classic meat-and-three, with everything made from scratch daily.

Southern Foodways Alliance

The SFA has invited Sophia Vaughn to cook at its symposia and commissioned a short film about the restaurant, placing it firmly in the documented record of Southern food.

John T. Edge, TrueSouth

Edge filmed the Nashville episode of TrueSouth here and has called Silver Sands a “backbone restaurant” — one that supports the working women and men of the city.
