The Regulars Who Have Been Coming for Forty Years

What it means when someone tells you they have eaten at the same restaurant every week since before you were born.

When Silver Sands reopened in January 2025 after a forced two-week closure, reporters covering the story found a line running out of the restaurant and onto the pavement. One of the people in it, a lifelong Nashvillian, told a local paper he had been coming at least once a week for forty years. He said he no longer has anyone at home to cook for him, so he comes here instead — and that when the restaurant was shut, he was genuinely hurting.

What forty years actually looks like

That is not an unusual relationship for this restaurant to have with its customers. There are people who ate here as children and now bring their own grandchildren. There are regulars whose order the kitchen staff know before they finish saying it. Owner Sophia Vaughn has spoken about delivering meals personally to elderly customers who can no longer get in — not as a formal service, just as something she does, because that is how she has always treated the people who eat here.

This is not incidental to the food. It is a large part of why the food is what it is. A restaurant that has served the same families for decades cannot quietly change its recipes or cut corners without someone noticing immediately and saying so. The consistency people talk about at Silver Sands is enforced, in the best sense, by customers who would know the difference.

Why it keeps the restaurant alive

It is also, very directly, why Silver Sands has survived what it has survived. When the 2020 tornado and pandemic hit, and again when the 2025 code violation forced a closure, it was not corporate resources or a marketing campaign that got the doors back open — it was several hundred people who consider this their kitchen, showing up, spreading the word, and turning out on reopening day.

If you are new here, you are joining something that already has its own history before you walk in. Come back a few times and you will start to understand why regulars talk about this restaurant the way they do.

Become a regular. Tuesday–Friday 6:30am–2:30pm, Sunday 11am–3pm. We will remember your order by your third visit.
