If you have never eaten at a meat-and-three before, walking into Silver Sands for the first time can feel like arriving somewhere with an unwritten set of rules. It is simpler than it looks. Here is exactly what to expect, start to finish.
1. Join the line
There is no host stand and no waiting to be seated. You walk in and join whatever line has formed, which at peak times — especially Sunday — can reach the door. It moves steadily. While you wait, look at what is in the steam table pans; that is your menu.
2. Choose your meat
As you reach the start of the line, tell the server which meat you want. Some items — catfish, whiting, salmon croquettes — are cooked to order rather than held on the line, so mention it early if you are in a hurry.
3. Choose your sides
Keep moving and call out your vegetables as you pass them. Most people take two or three. If you cannot decide, ask what is good today — the honest answer changes daily, and the staff will actually tell you.
4. Bread and drinks
One cornbread — hot water or flat buttermilk, your choice — comes free with the meal. Extra is $1. Drinks, including sweet tea, lemonade and coffee, are at the end of the line.
5. Pay and sit, or say “to go”
You pay at the register at the end. Cash and cards both work; we do not accept checks. If you want it boxed up rather than plated, say “to go” at the start of the line, not the end.
A few honest tips
Come hungry — portions are large, and plenty of people leave with a second meal in a box. Ask questions freely; nobody minds explaining what hog maws are or whether the greens have pork in them, and the staff answer these questions several times a day. And do not skip the cornbread, even if you think you are full — it is the dish people remember afterward more than almost anything else.
Now you know what to do. Check today's menu before you come so you have an idea of what you want, and see the full ordering guide for more detail.
